Transparent Watercolor Classes
Location:
Medina MN
Description: I teach using Transparent Watercolors. From the first day, my students learn to paint wet into wet. We soak the entire surface of the paper, and then plunge into the painting with a large brush saturated with paint. This is normally done to define the large areas of the painting with irregularly defined color, which is then sharpened and refined with more controlled painting as the paper (and preceding paint) dries. The art school is located in my home. I provide a fun and challenging art environment for students to develop transparent watercolor skills based on a proven art program that builds from lesson to lesson. The sessions are set in blocks of 8 classes allowing the student to have a flexible schedule. I offer 4 levels of instruction: Beginner Classes – Paint transparent watercolors. Learn the tools of fine art like color, value, shapes, direction, line and texture. Intermediate Classes – Knowledge of Design Laws is essential to fine art. Students who have mastered the tools of fine art will study how the principles apply to design laws. Advanced Classes – Structural Design is essential to the foundation of a good painting. Students will learn good Compositional Design. Creative Design Classes – Students who have completed all courses are eligible to join the workshops. No more than 8 students.

Beautiful Bouquet
Location:
Maple Grove Community Center, 12951 Weaver Lake Road, Maple Grove, MN 55369
Description:
February is the perfect month to think of beautiful flowers. In this workshop you’ll learn a process to create a soft bouquet of flowers. However, the same process could be applied to any subject. Techniques used will include working on wet paper, creating different edge qualities to shapes, developing a painting through progressively darker values, glazing, and lifting. Participants will be provided with the sketch already on watercolor paper (however, those who would rather sketch freehand are welcome to), a reference photo, a typed outline (so you can focus on instruction vs taking notes), and step-by-step instruction through all stages of the painting. Hope to see ya there!

Title: Portraits that glow with Life
Location:
4008 Birch Knoll Dr., White Bear Lake, MN 55110 (2 miles north of Century college)
Description:
This class for experienced beginners to advance watercolor painters will paint a lifelike rendering of one person of the student’s choice using my signature glazing technique. Class will begin by creating a line drawing to trace onto their watercolor paper. Instructions will be given to create this drawing from a black and white copy of their reference photo enlarged to the size they want to paint it. So, drawing skills are not necessary if you start this way. My technique of glazing, is an adaptation of an old master’s technique, and the colors I have developed create a lifelike glow to skin tones. Class is taught step-by-step with demonstrations each followed with help one-on-one. A supply list will be sent.

Better than that, you’ll learn what makes watercolor so fun and amazing by understanding how to better control the medium. Day 2 “Stunning Sculptures” April 2nd is dedicated to learning a fun process for creating textures ideal for rocks, old buildings, and sculptures. By working wet-into-wet with magic colors, it’s easy to set the stage for our subject. You’ll learn multiple ways to lift colors, glaze, and negative paint to bring out the sculpture. Lastly, adding key darks will make the painting Pop! Day 3 “May I Come In?” aka. the “Barn” painting April 3rd is our final finale and we’ll celebrate with a popular and award winning barn and pumpkin piece. You will learn how to preserve whites, pour, negative paint, glaze, and lift before going home for a well deserved nap.
