Group Paint Events


The Wednesday Morning Plein Air outings are sponsored by Northstar Watermedia Society. They are open to ALL Painters. In other words, non members of NWS are warmly welcomed. Lunch arrangements up to the individuals, bringing a bag lunch is an option. We gather around 9AM but you can join us at anytime during the morning.

MAY – Meet at Centennial Methodist Church – Indoors or out.
May 15 -  Outdoors at Centennial Church, or indoors if you prefer, if rainy or cold or Central Park off Lexington.
May 22 – Meet at Centennial Church, indoors if you prefer, or group may consider another nearby outdoor option. (Mary’s gazebo perhaps)
May 29 – Meet at Centennial Church, indoors if you prefer, or try Co Rd C2 west of Fairview on Langdon Lake. Dead ends into nice spot for painting. Eat at The Grateful Table, 2804 Fairview.

June 5 – Corner of Western and Selby Ave in St Paul Great sites for painting coffee drinkers on sidewalk café, the St Paul Cathedral, and the Swedish Church, and all the great houses in the area. Or continue on Western to Summit. Summit Lookout Park. across the street from the University Club. Plenty of benches and a good view of the High Bridge. Lots of parking available on the street and you are close enough to join us for lunch at Nina’s.

June 12 – Lake Phalen. There’s a new Chinese Pavilion on the west side of the park. From Hwy 36, take Hwy 61 south to Wheelock Pkwy, then go Left to the park Entrance. Park on North side of lake for less walking.

June 19 – White Bear Lake Marina Off Hwy 61, by Kowalski’s. Eat at the VFW deck or inside.

June 26 – Como Zoo lunch in or outside at the cafe. (note the zoo doesn’t open until 10:00), but there’s plenty to paint outside the entrance. Inside the zoo, meet at the giraffes as some us will be there.

July 3 – Northeast Minneapolis – on Architect Ave (North of Columbia Golf Course). Go to 37th Ave and Central. It’s a couple blocks west of Central and south of 37th. Triangle Park or view of downtown from Central.

July 10 – St. Anthony Main An old standby eating at Aster Cafe. Meter parking.

July 17 – Stevens House/Minnehaha Falls The park is on the Minnehaha parkway close to the Mississippi River. Paint the Falls, or head to the Stevens House to the south of the falls People recommend the Sea Salt restaurant located in the pavilion.

July 31 – Dodge Nature Center. 1715 Charlton St, West St Paul, MN 55118. Take 35E to Hwy 13 go Left, then south (R) on Wachtler ave, Left on Wentworth Av, Right on Charlton St. Note: entrance is to the Right, off Charlton Street between Marie and Wentworth Avenue,
but not very well marked. Barn, animals, windmill, farmhouse sugar shack. Dodge Nature Center’s Lilly Property is located at 590 Highway 62, between Dodd Road and Delaware Avenue in Mendota Heights. Much easier directions down 52 to Wentworth past Robert st to
Charlton Street left to the environment magnet school 1740 Charlton Street.

Aug 1 – Stillwater old lift bridge. Eat at PD Pappy’s when done

Aug 7 – St Paul St. Anthony Park Como and Carter Av. Library and other nice views. Library at 2245 Como Ave is a gem in the Saint Anthony Park neighborhood. It’s charming, the architecture is beautiful. Nice lunch options here, Colossal, Finish Bistro, Nico’s Taco Bar.

Aug 14 – Lakewood Cemetery ( 3600 Hennepin Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55408. It is near Lake Harriet in Minneapolis plug meters but great sailing, beach and people watching. Or find the rose garden east of the lake.

Aug 21 – White Bear Lake 4th Street and Lake Avenue North, near Manitou Island.

Sept 4 – Hudson – Bob’s Boat code to enter to be emailed later in the summer . Hudson. Wisconsin Marina Stillwater. We can meet at the marina entrance the first left after you enter the town. Hudson is a quaint town with many painting spots. Check at the entrance to the Marina and choose where you want to paint. Either the marina or the town works for painting.

Sept 11 – Historic District of Milwaukee St In Minneapolis between 23rd and 24th Ave on Franklin Ave and 24th St on the North and SouthParking on 23rd Ave or 24th Ave or on 24th St. and start walking into the center of the square. Lunch options Seward Café or Pizza
Luce or Tracey’s Saloon all of which are located on Franklin between 23rd and 24th.

Sept 18 and after
Sibley house in Mendota free parking on site Get there by hwy 13 either from West St Paul or be exiting off Hwy 10 and Hwy 13.

Crosby Farm Regional Park 2595 Crosby Farm Rd -BBQ Grill, Biking Trail, Fire Pit, Hiking Trail, Lake, Picnic Area, Restroom Facilities, and Shelter picnic facilities & a boat launch Burlington Northern Sante Fe RR yard and Industrial Site Lake (St Anthony Parkway) 33rd NE and Main St NE one block west of University Ave. Park to the north off St Anthony parkway and if so inclined lunch at Sarnia’s Grill at 3939 University Ave NE. This is a great site to observe trains.

Lake Gervais off Edgerton; Lake Gervais is located just north of hwy 36 on Edgerton. Take the Edgerton exit off Hwy 36 and go north on Edgerton about 1/8 mile. There is a beach, beach house with rest rooms and a large parking lot, Near by a grove of oak trees and a fishing dock.
