Our guest artist for April was Minnesota artist, Kent Estey. Kent lives in Naytahwaush, Minnesota and is a proud member of the White Earth Nation of Ojibwe.
Kent honored the memory of his grandmother, Josephine Robinson, by sharing her life story and her artistry as a Black Ash basket maker.
Inspired by his grandmother and by artist George Morrison, Kent has followed an artistic journey from his early traditional style through his more recent abstract multimedia works. He uses a variety of mediums in his work and often features stones, copper or other metals to add depth and texture to his paintings. Kent uses deep earth tones and is inspired by the natural world around him. He says, “my feelings and emotions are what’s expressed on canvas and paper. That’s my way of capturing and honoring my beautiful Ojibwe heritage.”
