NorthStar Watermedia Society is the oldest watermedia society in Minnesota. The group promotes the artistic use of water-based media and is well-known for lively and informative monthly meetings, art shows, and demonstrations that feature local, national, and internationally known watermedia artists.

Welcome to the award ceremony for the NorthStar Watermedia Society’s 2026 National Spring Online Exhibition, Awakening!

Join us as we celebrate outstanding watercolor and watermedia artwork from artists across the country. This special online exhibition showcases a diverse collection of inspiring paintings centered around the theme Awakening — exploring renewal, transformation, discovery, and creative expression through watermedia.

Featured juror David R. Becker shares his thoughtful selections, insightful critiques, and professional observations about the award-winning paintings and the artistic qualities that made them stand out. His expertise and encouraging commentary provide valuable inspiration for artists and art lovers alike.

"Awakening" Awards Ceremony - 2026 NSWS National Spring Online Exhibition

Join the NorthStar Watermedia Society for a painting demo by the talented Deb Zeller! She will be sketching and painting a live model as we wonder and learn from her process.

Join us on Thursday, April 16th, 2026, at 6:30 pm for Deb's demo.

Deb Zeller began her art career at age thirteen, when she received a set of oil paints for her birthday. Over the decades, she has developed her skills in drawing, painting, glass fusion, encaustic (beeswax) painting, photography, and bronze sculpture.

Join the NorthStar Watermedia Society for a live watercolor demo by decorated artist, David Smith. David Smith is well-known locally and nationally in the watercolor artist community for his plein air and studio paintings. A skilled instructor, he has taken several groups to Europe for wonderful food and beautiful locations to paint and learn.

David’s paintings have been accepted into the American Transparent Watercolor Society.

David will demo painting a snow scene to inspire us to capture the beauty of a pristine snowfall.
