Artist Highlight

NSWS Welcomes Patty Schmid as our Member Artist Highlight!

Patty loves to capture personalities in her portraits. She always loved to draw and paint, but she got very excited about watercolor back in 1996, when she took a class in watercolor at a community college. Patty painted off and on since then, but in 2015, she started painting again in earnest. She continues to attend workshops and is always learning. In 2021, she found that she loved sculpting the features of people with her brush, paying close attention to their faces.

She was so surprised to win Best of Show in the first exhibition she entered, a NorthStar members’ show in the spring of 2022. Since then, she gained experience by painting many portrait commissions and has won several more awards.

In painting her portraits, she sees that it is very important to get a good likeness of the subject. Getting the shadow shapes right makes people look real. She especially loves to paint the eyes and get that sparkle. This summer, she also started learning to do caricatures and is having fun with it!
