2013 Members’ Exhibition: “Sparkle”
Co-chairs Marie Panlener and Deanna Jokinen (click on any image to see a larger version) This year we saw a lot of change. First of all the name of the fall show changed to Members’ Exhibition. The venue changed to the Northrup King Building in northeast Minneapolis, a creative center for over 200 artists, including some of our own members. And – best of all – it occurred during Art Attack where more than 1000 people viewed the 88 paintings in the show during the 3 day event! The opening reception and awards ceremony took place on Wednesday evening, October 30. Members and their families gathered to see the exhibition, and to hear Juror Jill Van Sickle present awards to the winners.
2013 Juror’s Comments
Juror Jill Van Sickle began her presentation with the comment, “It was much harder than expected. I based my decisions on a balance between technical merit and creativity, but it was like comparing apples and oranges because of the range of approaches in this show.”
Honorable Mention
“Nature Life” by Leonilda Edith Estrin This is all about color. She has confidence in color and not scared by it. She uses color in a significantly different way.
“Dappled Palm Fronds” by Patty Healy This is a technically beautiful painting, emotional and happy. The technique takes patience.
“Baby it’s Cold Outside” by Jeannie Ferdinand The painting is interesting because of the neutrals and monotones. Moody. The viewpoint is interesting – from close up and far away.
“Workers” by Richard Graves Besides showing technical skill, this painting is interesting because of the subject matter, two workers and a manhole!
“Golden Season” by Marie Hammond
Awards of Merit
“Glassy Waters” by Calvin deRuyter A stunning landscape. There is a clear sense of calm with the slight texture of gold.
“Auspicious Journey in Time” by Lana Grow This type of abstract is hard to do well. It has a masterful sense of color and held my interest.
“Autumn Light” by David Smith Technically, this is unbelievably well done. Great perspective and lighting.
“Study” by Linda Stout The technical skill in the handling of the fabric is wonderful. You have to look close. It also has emotional appeal.
Awards of Excellence
3rd Place “Central Park Taxi” by Rebecca Cardinal This painting is not just photo realism. If you take a close look you see the technical skill and creativity. Great line quality.
2nd Place “Sailing Through Life” by Karen Knutson In this painting, creativity is weighted heavily. A great deal of thought went into it.
Best of Show
“Stone Series II” by Jan Vaughan This best of show represents the best of technical skill and creativity. It is both abstract and realistic. 50/50.
